About This Amarillo Housing Authority - Amarillo Community Development Department
The waiting list for housing assistance in Amarillo, TX has grown to 3,400 applicants, which means that new applicants will have to wait for at least four years. Consequently, the Department of Community Development has decided to close the waiting list until further notice, starting from October 10th.
Moreover, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has recently made changes to its policies for calculating Section 8 Housing Assistance. Instead of calculating the utility allowance based on the size of the rented unit, it will now be based on the size of the family. Both participants and landlords have been informed of this change.
The City of Amarillo Community Development Department is funded by federal and state grants to administer various programs aimed at assisting low income citizens. The programs seek to enhance the living conditions and economic opportunities of low and very low income neighborhoods and citizens through the provision of housing opportunities, neighborhood improvements, and public services.
How to apply
Public housing is a form of housing tenure in which the property is usually owned by a government
authority, either central or local. The federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD) department
addressed concerns of distressed properties and blighted superblocks with revitalization and funding
projects for the renewal of public housing to decrease its density and allow for tenants with mixed
income levels.
