About This Lakewood Housing Authority
The Lakewood Housing Authority is dedicated to providing affordable and safe housing to low-income families and individuals. Along with this mission, the organization strives to empower its residents through self-sufficiency initiatives and enhance their economic stability and quality of life. The Lakewood Housing Authority offers five programs, including Public Housing, Section 8, Family Self-Sufficiency, Family Unification Program, and Homeownership Program. Interested applicants can download an application from the organization's website, visit the office during working hours, or request an application to be mailed to them. Unfortunately, emergency housing is not available. After completing the application process, eligible individuals or families will be placed on the waiting list, which may take anywhere from six months to several years, depending on the apartment size. The Lakewood Housing Authority office is open from Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, except on recognized holidays. Eligibility for housing programs is primarily based on income and family size, and for Section 8, rent would generally account for 30% of the adjusted gross income, with some exceptions explained by the case worker.
How to apply
Public housing is a form of housing tenure in which the property is usually owned by a government
authority, either central or local. The federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD) department
addressed concerns of distressed properties and blighted superblocks with revitalization and funding
projects for the renewal of public housing to decrease its density and allow for tenants with mixed
income levels.
