About This Alameda County Housing Authority

Residents who qualify can receive housing assistance from the Alameda County Housing Authority. The Housing Choice Voucher - Section 8 Program and Public Housing management are the programs through which assistance is provided. However, there may be a waiting list for these programs and rentals. The Housing Authority has 12 housing complexes and 7 condominiums that cater to very-low and low-income residents, providing housing for over 550 families. In addition, the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program assists approximately 1600 very-low income families. Anyone seeking housing assistance can contact the Housing Authority directly to learn more about eligibility requirements, availability of assistance, and application procedures. To become eligible for the housing assistance programs administered by the Housing Authority of the County of Alameda (HACA), all applicants, including any additional family members approved by HACA, must meet the program's eligibility requirements. Applicants must provide the necessary information to confirm eligibility and determine the level of assistance they are entitled to. Eligibility is based on the applicant family qualifying as defined by HUD and HACA, having an income that is at or below the HUD-specified income limits, and qualifying on the basis of citizenship or eligible immigrant status. Family members must also provide their social security numbers, and consent to HACA's collection and use of family information as provided for in HACA-provided consent forms. Additionally, HACA will disqualify any family whose current or past behavior is prohibited by HUD or HACA. More information about these requirements is available in HACA's Section 8 Administrative Plan (Admin Plan) and its Public Housing Admissions and Continued Occupancy Plan (ACOP).

How to apply

Public housing is a form of housing tenure in which the property is usually owned by a government authority, either central or local. The federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD) department addressed concerns of distressed properties and blighted superblocks with revitalization and funding projects for the renewal of public housing to decrease its density and allow for tenants with mixed income levels.
