Cuney Homes, the first public housing development opened by the Housing Authority in 1938, is located in Houston's Third Ward community, directly opposite Texas Southern University. The complex is named after Norris Wright Cuney, a prominent African American leader in Texas during the late 1800s. The Housing Authority's design and modernization work on the complex earned a National Award of Merit from the National Association of Housing & Redevelopment Officials in 1997. Cuney Homes has 564 units, with a mix of one, two, three, and four-bedroom apartments. It is privately managed by J. Allen Management and is located near several schools, including Blackshear Elementary School and Ryan Middle School, as well as Texas Southern University and the University of Houston. The complex is also near several healthcare facilities, parks, and community centers, and has regular Metro Bus service.
