About This Berks Community Action Program
BCAP is a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to over 2,500 low-income families and individuals each year. They offer the Homeowners Emergency Mortgage Assistance Program (HEMAP) to help homeowners stay in their homes while they work on improving their financial situation. HEMAP provides loans to homeowners who have received an Act 91 notice to pay their mortgages until they are financially stable again.
Additionally, BCAP has a Homeless Assistance Program for families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Eligible families can receive rental-related payments directly to their landlords to pay for security deposits, first month's rent, or both. BCAP offers various other housing programs for low-income and homeless individuals, and anyone interested can contact them at (610) 376-6571 for more information.
BCAP's office hours are from Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with a lunch break from 12:30 to 1:30 PM.
How to apply
Public housing is a form of housing tenure in which the property is usually owned by a government
authority, either central or local. The federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD) department
addressed concerns of distressed properties and blighted superblocks with revitalization and funding
projects for the renewal of public housing to decrease its density and allow for tenants with mixed
income levels.
