About This Geauga Metropolitan Housing Authority
The agency provides affordable housing for eligible households that is safe and decent. They own a total of 243 units across Geauga County, with 30 family units in Bainbridge (Strickland Arms), 38 family units in Newbury (Scranton Woods), 49 family units in Middlefield (Cloverdale Estates), and two facilities in Chardon - Murray Manor with 76 units and Harris House with 50 units. They administer Federal funds to provide low-income housing through two programs: Low-Income Public Housing and Housing Choice Voucher Program (formerly Section 8). Office hours are on Tuesdays from 9:30am-11:30am and Wednesdays from 2:00pm-4:00pm. To qualify, applicants must have an adjusted gross family income within federally designated low-income limits (less than or equal to 80% of the median household income for the area). They must agree to comply with the GMHA lease agreement, have a Social Security number or documentation supporting its non-existence, and not have any overdue balances with GMHA or any other subsidized housing program in which they have participated in the past. For family units only, clients must be able to get gas and electric utilities in their name (a credit check will be done to verify this). Preference points are given to those employed and residing in Geauga County, veterans or widows of veterans, those 62 years of age or older, and those receiving Social Security Disability, SSI Disability or any other payments because of an inability to work. If two or more applicants have the same amount of preference points, the date and time of application are considered in the ranking. Applicants must also pass a criminal background check. The rent is generally 30% of the family's adjusted gross income, up to a flat ceiling rent for each unit.
